Meeting new people and catching up with old friends and colleagues are some of the most rewarding parts of working in scholarly publishing. We look forward to these industry conferences every year, and we are always on the lookout for new ones. In 2019, our staff traveled the globe both for professional development and on behalf of our clients, and we look forward to even more in 2020.
If you’re planning to attend any of these events or are in the area and would like to meet, let us know!
Journal Article Tag Suite Conference 2020
28-29 April 2020
Lister Hill Auditorium at the National Library of Medicine on the NIH Campus
This will be our first in-person JATS-Con (we live-streamed it in our office last year) as we travel to Bethesda, MD. We are an advocate for standards, including JATS XML for exchanging journal content. We look forward to connecting with the NISO and NLM communities and learning more about the future of scholarly publishing standards. As publisher reliance on XML grows, so must our expertise.
ACES 24th Annual National Conference
The American Copy Editors Society
30 April – 2 May
Hilton Salt Lake City Center
Salt Lake City, Utah
Up first is ACES who will hold their 24th Annual National Conference in Salt Lake City, UT, punctuated by keynote speaker Paisley Rekdal, Utah Poet Laureate. She is a professor at the University of Utah, has authored books, and has been awarded 5 fellowships, and her poetry has appeared in The New York Times. This meeting is beneficial for all types of editors whether they want to network or get hands-on practical education in their field. Our copy editors always get something useful out of this meeting.
2020 CSE Annual Meeting
Council of Science Editors
Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront
We are looking forward to the 2020 CSE Annual Meeting in Portland, OR, from May 2nd to the 5th. This year’s theme is “Advancing Science by Exchanging Knowledge” with keynote speaker Brian Nosek, who also spoke at last year’s ISMTE meeting. After the keynote, keep an eye out for our first booth of the year, where you can exchange some of that knowledge with J&J publishing professionals. J&J staff will also be moderating and speaking at multiple CSE sessions this year—stay tuned for more details!
SSP 42nd Annual Meeting
Society for Scholarly Publishing
After a quick break for spring cleaning, we head to Boston for SSP’s 42nd Annual Meeting from May 27th to the 29th. The theme this year is “Rethink, Reimagine, & Revolutionize the Future of Scholarly Communication.” In our constantly evolving industry, organizations like SSP and their annual meetings give us a venue to share our experiences and play a role in steering the industry in the right direction. If you want to discuss the industry, its changes, and what the future may hold, stop by our booth and navigate these unpredictable waters together.
Editorial Manager User Group – Aries Systems
Courtyard Boston Downtown Hotel
Only 13 days later and across town, J&J will attend the Editorial Manager User Group Meeting 2020, held from June 11th to the 12th. We use EM every day to manage peer review, and we cannot recommend this meeting enough to other managing editors who run journals on EM. Here you will learn about new features and best practices, and you can also give feedback directly to Aries staff and shape the future of EM (and PM [ProduXion Manager] too, for you production people).
ISMTE 2020 North American Conference
International Society of Managing and Technical Editors
The Drake Hotel
ISMTE will host their North American Conference on August 6th and 7th in Chicago, IL. Last year’s ISMTE meeting in Durham gave us a great opportunity to send more staff than we usually can. Chicago is a little farther away, but we will still be in attendance. If you’re going to the meeting, be sure to say hello to our J&Jers on the ISMTE Board: ISMTE Immediate Past-President Julie Nash and current Vice President Michelle English.
2020 ASAE Annual Meeting & Exposition
American Society of Association Executives
Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino
Las Vegas, Nevada
After Chicago, we turn right around and head west to the city in the desert for the ASAE Annual Meeting & Exposition taking place in the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, NV. We find ASAE is a great place to meet new people and catch up with society colleagues who we don’t see at our more publishing-focused meetings. We are exhibiting again this year, so stop by the booth and meet with our publishing professionals.
ISMTE 2020 Asia Pacific Conference
International Society of Managing and Technical Editors
Coming up next is the 2020 ISMTE Asia Pacific Conference held in Melbourne, Australia. It boasts a day and a half of educational offerings followed by a half-day COPE workshop on publishing ethics. As a delegate, you are sure to find practical information that can be immediately applied toward improving the quality of your editorial office and peer review process. We believe the Asia Pacific meeting is important as it builds connections to geographically underrepresented voices in scholarly publishing, and we’re excited to be attending.
OASPA Conference on Open Access Scholarly Publishing 2020
The Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association
Sofitel Victoria Warszawa
Representing a community of scholarly publishers and related organizations, OASPA is committed to developing and disseminating solutions that advance open access, preserve the integrity of scholarship, and promote best practice. OASPA is a trusted convener of open access stakeholders and a venue for productive collaboration. In response to their call, we will be attending the meeting in Warsaw, Poland to support this important scientific movement.
Frankfurt Book Fair 2020
Frankfurter Buchmesse GmbH
Frankfurt Messe Station
This is the premiere book fair and the largest conference in the world for the publishing industry at large. Last year Frankfurt attracted over 300,000 visitors from 104 countries. This year the guest of honor will be Canada, which will be sharing English, French, and First Nations literature in celebrating their nation’s diversity. We are beyond excited to rub shoulders with professionals from around the globe at the publishing industry’s premiere event.
2020 Charleston Conference
Charleston Library Conference
The Francis Marion, Embassy Suites Historic, Courtyard Marriott Historic, and Gaillard Center Charleston
Charleston, South Carolina
Our last industry event of the year will be our first visit to the Charleston Conference on November 2nd through the 6th. We are making a conscious effort to speak to, learn from, and make acquaintances with librarians in the scholarly publishing community. We understand the critical role they play in our industry and research and academia in general. We believe Charleston will give us a chance to connect with leading minds in the librarian community and understand their priorities as scholarly publishing continues to evolve.
And that’s it! We will be traveling from the Vegas strip to Australia in 2020, meeting with colleagues and hopefully making new friends along the way. If you are attending any of these meetings and want to make sure you run into us, reach out on twitter @jjeditorial, facebook J&J Editorial, LinkedIn J&J Editorial, or our email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
We will see you out on the road. Travel safe!
