Where to Find J&J in 2020: Our Scholarly Publishing Conference Roundup

Meeting new people and catching up with old friends and colleagues are some of the most rewarding parts of working in scholarly publishing. We look forward to these industry conferences every year, and we are always on the lookout for new ones. In 2019, our staff traveled the globe both for professional development and on behalf of our clients, and we look forward to even more in 2020.

If you’re planning to attend any of these events or are in the area and would like to meet, let us know!

Journal Article Tag Suite Conference 2020
28-29 April 2020
Lister Hill Auditorium at the National Library of Medicine on the NIH Campus
Bethesda, MD
https://jats.nlm.nih.gov/jats-con/

This will be our first in-person JATS-Con (we live-streamed it in our office last year) as we travel to Bethesda, MD. We are an advocate for standards, including JATS XML for exchanging journal content. We look forward to connecting with the NISO and NLM communities and learning more about the future of scholarly publishing standards. As publisher reliance on XML grows, so must our expertise.

ISMTE 2020 North American Conference
International Society of Managing and Technical Editors
6-7 August
The Drake Hotel
Chicago, Illinois

ISMTE will host their North American Conference on August 6th and 7th in Chicago, IL. Last year’s ISMTE meeting in Durham gave us a great opportunity to send more staff than we usually can. Chicago is a little farther away, but we will still be in attendance. If you’re going to the meeting, be sure to say hello to our J&Jers on the ISMTE Board: ISMTE Immediate Past-President Julie Nash and current Vice President Michelle English.

After Chicago, we turn right around and head west to the city in the desert for the ASAE Annual Meeting & Exposition taking place in the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, NV. We find ASAE is a great place to meet new people and catch up with society colleagues who we don’t see at our more publishing-focused meetings. We are exhibiting again this year, so stop by the booth and meet with our publishing professionals.

Coming up next is the 2020 ISMTE Asia Pacific Conference held in Melbourne, Australia. It boasts a day and a half of educational offerings followed by a half-day COPE workshop on publishing ethics. As a delegate, you are sure to find practical information that can be immediately applied toward improving the quality of your editorial office and peer review process. We believe the Asia Pacific meeting is important as it builds connections to geographically underrepresented voices in scholarly publishing, and we’re excited to be attending.

This year the guest of honor will be Canada, which will be sharing English, French, and First Nations literature in celebrating their nation’s diversity. We are beyond excited to rub shoulders with professionals from around the globe at the publishing industry’s premiere event.

2020 Charleston Conference
Charleston Library Conference

The Francis Marion, Embassy Suites Historic, Courtyard Marriott Historic, and Gaillard Center Charleston
Charleston, South Carolina
https://charlestonlibraryconference.com/

Our last industry event of the year will be our first visit to the Charleston Conference on November 2nd through the 6th. We are making a conscious effort to speak to, learn from, and make acquaintances with librarians in the scholarly publishing community. We understand the critical role they play in our industry and research and academia in general. We believe Charleston will give us a chance to connect with leading minds in the librarian community and understand their priorities as scholarly publishing continues to evolve.

And that’s it! We will be traveling from the Vegas strip to Australia in 2020, meeting with colleagues and hopefully making new friends along the way. If you are attending any of these meetings and want to make sure you run into us, reach out on twitter @jjeditorial, facebook J&J Editorial, LinkedIn J&J Editorial, or our email: [email protected].

We will see you out on the road. Travel safe!
